On Sunday, April 20, 2008, the Mayor of Tijeras, Honorable Gloria
J. Chavez was joined by Council Members, Planning and Zoning
Commissioners, state officials, print and radio media,
contractors and, of course, many veterans of our armed forces.
They all turned out for a ceremonial ground breaking at the
Village Center for the soon to be built Luis Garcia Park and
Veteran’s Memorial.  The park, located next to the Holy Child
Historic Church, will be named after Luis Garcia, one of the three
boys who tragically lost their lives in the Sandia Knolls in 1999.
The Garcia Family, who are Village residents were also at the
ceremony, as were the families of the other two boys.  NM State
Representative Kathy McCoy was also there and addressed the
crowd, as did Tito Madrid from Heather Wilson’s Office.  Eddie
Rael, AM Radio 1600 also came to the ceremony.  Eddie has
been a big supporter, and has been promoting the effort and
helping collect donations by airing information on the radio.

It seems that word of mouth was the one of the best promotional
methods for this ceremony, for what was intended to be a small,
low key, intimate gathering turned into an event with over 100
people, mostly veterans.  Intimacy was not lost, however.  The
crowd gathered in the Holy Child Parish historic church on the
site and listened to multiple speakers.  There were plenty of
tears shed, and plenty of laughter.  Afterward, patrons were
issued either a “gold” shovel,  or, for the veterans, a folding army-
issue shovel.  A circle of people gathered outside the church and,
upon command of Mayor Chavez, they all turned up some soil on
the site.

CBC Construction, under the plans from architects/engineers
Molzen-Corbin, have already begun work on the 120 day project.
A dedication ceremony is planned when the work is completed in
September.
